Exploring the DM-ID:

Diagnosing Mental Disorders in Persons with Intellectual Disabilities

The DM-ID is the Diagnostic Manual for Intellectual Disabilities (ID), and serves as a guide for diagnosis of mental disorders in persons with ID.

Although psychiatric disorders in persons with intellectual disabilities are common, they are often not appropriately identified.  Determining an accurate psychiatric diagnosis becomes especially difficult as the level of intellectual functioning declines.

To address this issue, the National Association for the Dually Diagnosed (NADD), in association with the American Psychiatric Association (APA), developed the Diagnostic Manual - Intellectual Disability (DM-ID):  A Clinical Guide for Diagnosis of Mental Disorders in Persons with Intellectual Disability.

On August 31st, InterHab will host a webinar session with Dr. Robert Fletcher, cheif editor of the DM-ID.  Dr. Fletcher will discuss common issues in dual diagnosis & how the DM-ID can aid in addressing those issues.  Following the introductory session a panel of experts will lead a discussion regarding best practices in diagnosis for Kansans with intellectual disabilities.
